Dr. Stephen Schimpff Awarded Mastership in The American College of Physicians

SGP senior advisor elevated to the highest level of recognition by the ACP

Baltimore, MD – November 28, 2017 – Sage Growth Partners (SGP), a Baltimore-based healthcare research, strategy, and marketing firm today announced that Stephen Schimpff, MD, MACP, has been awarded Mastership by the American College of Physicians (ACP). Dr. Schimpff is a senior advisor with SGP, a retired professor of medicine at the University of Maryland Medical School, and former chief executive officer of the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Dr. Schimpff has had a distinguished career as a physician in academic medicine including cancer research, teaching, and leadership. He was an early advocate for an empiric treatment of febrile neutropenia. His approach, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1972, became the gold standard around the world and has saved untold numbers of lives. Dr. Schimpff became internationally recognized for his research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of infection in cancer patients undergoing aggressive cancer therapy. He has published more than 200 scientific articles and texts, and has written five medically-oriented books for a general audience.

With 150,000 members across the country, the ACP only elevates approximately 50 to the level of Master each year. Election to Mastership recognizes outstanding and extraordinary career accomplishments, with awardees having demonstrated eminence in practice, leadership, or medical research.

“I am very honored and proud to have been elected by my peers in the ACP to this esteemed position,” said Dr. Schimpff. “I have spent my career in medicine – first as a practicing doctor, then as a professor, a researcher, a leader of a healthcare organization, and finally as an author. It has been my goal to give back to the community through my work. Thank you to the ACP for this distinction.”
